“When you preach open air, you follow directly in the footsteps of The Master Preacher--Jesus. You also follow John the Baptist, Paul, Peter, the disciples, John Wesley, Whitefield, Spurgeon, and others. A good open air preacher can reach more unsaved people in a good open air than the average church does in a year. If you want to be a fisher of men, you have to go where the fish are. They don't come to you - you have to go to them. That's why Jesus said, "Go..." Thank God the disciples didn't stay in the Upper Room and pray that sinners come in - they went open air.” (Ray Comfort)

Open Air Preaching Rights:

It is always useful to know your rights before you preach open air.  God did not call us to defend the First Amendment, but to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ; however, we should be diligent in using the freedoms we have for the furtherance of the Gospel.  It would not be a bad idea to have some of these documents with you when you preach.  Unfortunately, many police officers do not know the applicable laws concerning open air preaching.

Drawing a Crowd:

How can you get a group of people to stop and listen to the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ?  Some recommendations:

1. A crowd draws a crowd.  Take some dedicated Christian friends with you.  Have them spread out and listen to you attentively as you begin to speak. This will embolden strangers to stop and see what you are talking about as well.  These fellow-laborers (a) should be careful not to distract, (b) should pray indiscreetly while you are preaching, and they could also (c) distribute Gospel tracts once you have completed preaching and the crowd begins to disperse.

2. Elevate yourself.  Use a soap box, ladder, etc.  Things that are unusual will “intrigue” people.  They will stop to investigate “why is this person standing on a soapbox?”

3. Start in the “natural” realm and swing to the “eternal”.  This is what Jesus did with the “Woman at the Well” in John Chapter 4.  Begin by speaking about something of general interest to the public and then make the transition to the eternal.  You can do this by asking trivia questions.  Give a dollar or a small gift to anyone who gets the answer right.  (You don’t have to give much – people like receiving anything that is free.)  Once a crowd has gathered, you can transition from a trivia question to the Gospel proclamation.  For example:  Once you have asked a few trivia questions and a crowd has gathered you can ask if anyone can name 5 of the 10 Commandments.  From there you can begin to expand on the law of God, our sin, God’s righteous judgment, and the only Way of Salvation – Jesus Christ.
